Still on the northern coast of Upper Cape Breton, we continued on the Cabot Trail ... then veered off, and headed for Dingwall, on one side trip. Then back on the Trail briefly before taking another long detour. We headed due north, towards Bay St. Lawrence. The views looking back and ahead were just stunning. We were high above the ocean most of the way, and could see miles of coastal cliffs; as we turned a bend we could see further out and beyond another, revealing the "layers" of coast as they were compressed in our sightline. About halfway to Meat Cove (great name) the paved road turned to dirt. So we bumped and bounced along for the next eight miles as we wound our way to the end of the line. Along the way we had an unexpected visitor ... a black bear appeared in the road, just 100 yards ahead of us. We stopped and exchanged glances with him, before he disappeared back into the brush. This was a place where it felt so remote, so north of anywhere else I'd ever been. It was a foreign, yet comfortable and satisfying sensation. We were in a good place, and lucky.
