Halifax was the start and end point of our trip. We would spend almost six days in Nova Scotia and cover over 1000 miles. Though we weren't in Halifax long, we drove all around and got a good feel for the city and the lay of the land. It's about a perfect size not too big or small, manageable and friendly.
On our return to the city on our last day, we had one more stop to make Fairview Cemetery. This was one of three places in the city where Titanic victims had been buried. Because Nova Scotia was the closest land to the site of the sinking, many bodies were brought here, and at the request of relatives, laid to rest. At the time, those in charge went through a painstaking process to try to identify all the victims, as a last tribute. They were amazingly successful, though there were still many unmarked graves. At Fairview, over 100 gravesites are grouped together. The enormity of the tragedy became very real, even so many years later, as we walked though the area and read the stones.
One of two massive bridges that cross Halifax harbour ... we would use both, coming and going.
